What to Pack

Here’s a handy list of things you may want to remember to do to prepare — and to bring along — next time you come to KansasFest.  Please read the F.A.Q. for useful packing and traveling information.

Computer Equipment

  • Computer
  • Monitor
  • Extended VGA / DVI / HDMI / monitor / projector cable / adapter
  • Emergency boot CD
  • Ethernet / AirPort hub / switch / router
  • 3G / 4G / LTE USB modem
  • Ethernet cable, 10+ foot (Optional.  There’s Ethernet is in every room, but most people use wireless.)
  • Ethernet crossover cable (to connect two computers)
  • Extended keyboard & mouse
  • Zip / floppy drive
  • USB thumb drive / CompactFlash / SD card / CD-Rs / Zip disks / floppies / other removable media
  • Power cords / rechargeable batteries / docking stations
  • USB headset (for Skype)
  • Digital camera with card reader / USB cable / battery recharger / additional media
  • Programming reference manuals for HackFest
  • Vendor fair (including small bills to make change; cash receipts; credit card machine / Square device) & exhibit hall items

Other Electronics

  • Soldering iron
  • Adapter AC, three prong 120-volt, AC
  • Extension cord
  • Power strips / surge suppressors (at least one)
  • Laser pointer
  • GPS
  • Radio, iPod, walkman / discman, earphones / speakers, audio splitter

Phone Stuff

  • Cell phone/smartphone
  • Note: Even a deactivated cellular phone must by law carry your 911 call. Get an old cell phone and car adapter, put it in the trunk and use it in case of an emergency. (Can only be used to report an accident or call for EMERGENCY help.)
  • Cell phone charger
  • National ISP numbers (AOL, NetZero, etc.) for Kansas City, MO (area code 816) — for classic computers without broadband
  • Phone cable 25– to 50–feet (in case phone jack is on wrong side of the room :)
  • Phone jack double outlet

Personal Items

  • Pillow and pillowcase (Unlike past years, we no longer receive pillows unless ordered during registration.)
  • Clothes, sneakers, sandals, unmentionables
  • Light sleeping clothing
  • Alarm clock
  • Ear plugs
  • Coffee cup, coffee and coffee maker (or use the Keurig in the lobby)
  • Dental floss
  • Hat, sunblock, sunglasses
  • Umbrella for rain and sun protection
  • Cash, check book, travelers checks, credit / debit cards
  • Munchies, gum, water bottle
  • Paper bag for garbage (or Bite the Bag)
  • Linens / towels (a “twin-size” flat sheet and fitted sheet, two bath towels, a hand towel, a wash cloth, and a blanket are provided if you ordered them at registration time)
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, bar soap, shampoo, conditioner, comb, shaving cream & razor
  • Soap holder, like that used for camping
  • Shower clogs / footwear
  • Bathrobe
  • Facial tissue
  • Desk lamp
  • Door sign
  • Painter’s masking tape for door sign
  • “Tie” for the banquet and roast
  • Eyeglasses & eyeglass case, contact solution
  • Medications (perhaps with prescriptions) — pack in carry-on
  • Postcards & stamps
  • Books / magazines / reading material for travel
  • Digital movies / DVDs (WarGames, Fire in the Valley, Scott Pilgrim, MST3K / RiffTrax — never know when a night in with some geeks might be a good idea!)

Utilities & Miscellaneous

  • Quarters for laundry
  • Plastic bag for dirty laundry
  • Laundry detergent
  • Needle nose pliers, screwdrivers, etc.
  • Heavy tape for packing and to keep extension and phone cords out of the way
  • Maps to campus, addresses, phone numbers of school & fellow attendees
  • Peikop Endropov schedule
  • Paper towels
  • Plastic bag for coffee grounds, wet stuff
  • Cooler & drinks for room
  • Extra luggage for hauling goodies back home
